What is Operation
Appreciation?
On Veteran’s Day,
Wednesday, November 11, 2009, we will have our 2nd
annual “Operation Appreciation” on AM 1450 WWJB. Our show will
begin at 4PM, and run until the last phone call is taken, most
likely beyond 10PM. We open the phone lines and allow callers to
extend their thanks to service members serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The messages are recorded, written to CD, and
included in care packages sent to the troops. With our recent
loss of Spc. Justin Coleman, we are reminded that the freedom we
enjoy is not free. It sometimes comes at the cost of a
service member paying the ultimate sacrifice. We cannot forget
his sacrifice, or the sacrifice of the 5,100 + other servicemen
and women that we’ve lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. We must also
never forget our veterans, and we must show the troops serving
today that we appreciate them, and unconditionally support them.
This year, we are adding an essay
contest, which is open to all students and schools in Hernando County, from 3rd
through 12th grades. Every student that participates
will be eligible to win donated prizes, valued at a minimum
$100, in a random drawing held live on the day of the event. We
will also pick one essay from each grade level, and invite the
student to read their essay live on the air. If the student
doesn’t feel comfortable reading it live, we will read it with
their permission.
What is the essay topic this
year?
Our goal this year is
to have kids open up dialogue with someone, whether it be their
history teacher, a parent, a grandparent, or a family friend,
and learn more about the Vietnam war, and how Vietnam Veterans
were treated upon returning home compared to how Veterans of
other wars were treated.
"From 1959 to 1975, many brave
American men and women served their country overseas in the
Vietnam War. Upon returning home, most of them were not welcomed
back with as much appreciation as Veterans of other wars.
Part I - "Why do you think Vietnam Veterans were treated so
poorly upon returning home from war?"
Part II, "If you had the opportunity to say something to a
Vietnam Veteran, what would it be?"
What kind of sponsorships are
available?
We are looking for
kid-related prizes valued at a minimum $100.00.
The prizes will not be given to us directly; we request that the
donating company give us a voucher, which in turn will be
distributed to the winning student for redemption at your place
of business. Examples: Savings bonds;
entertainment-related tickets, such as bowling / movie theater /
Bucs or Lightning tickets; gift cards for local
restaurants, etc.
Please contact
us if you have any ideas, or would like to donate.
In appreciation for your donation, we will list your
business on our website, in press releases when/where possible,
and mentioned several times live during the show on Veterans
Day.
Who are Bill Pierson and Robert
Rogoski?
Brothers-in-law, graduates
from Springstead High School in 1989/90, and Marine Corps
veterans that think our service members and veterans should be
honored and appreciated for their service to our country. No
matter what branch, years served, whether serving in the US or
overseas - every service member that joined our military to
defend our United States of America deserves nothing less than
our unconditional gratitude. |
